  • What is Boone Crew and Braves Rowing, Inc.?
Crew is both a varsity and a club sport. Like other varsity sports, rowers represent their school in competitions with other schools. Boone Crew is a member of the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association, the governing body for high school rowing in the state of Florida. FSRA is the host of Florida State Championship Regattas at the end of each season. Boone Crew also competes with local rowing clubs not affiliated with schools. Clubs also compete in USRowing-sponsored regattas. USRowing is a non-profit membership organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body of the sport. To learn more, visit usrowing.org. Braves Rowing Inc. (BRI) is the non-profit organization that supports the team and is comprised of rowers, parent volunteers, and coaches. All parties work together to donate time, talent, and resources to keep the team running smoothly.
  • Who do we compete with?
We compete with other scholastic varsity teams as well as club teams from around the state and region. Most regattas (competitions) are held in Central Florida, but our team has traveled to the Northeast and other areas to compete in Regional and National regattas. Our novice rowers typically compete in three to four regattas in the Fall. Varsity rowers may compete in up to six regattas in the Fall. Fall regattas are long distances races called "Head Races." The Spring season is busier with all rowers competing in up to 10 regattas depending on how they place. These races are shorter distance, "Sprint Races."
  • Do you have programs for other ages?
We have a very successful Summer Program for rising sixth graders through rising seniors.
  • How do I join the team?
Visit the Registration page to find the forms needed to join the team. All athletes must be registered and cleared prior to participating in practice.
  • How much does it cost?
Rowers pay a $150 non-refundable registration fee to cover US Rowing membership and other administrative costs upfront. This will be billed upon submission of registration documents. Membership dues may be paid annually, semi-annually (both with discounts) or monthly (approx $250) for the Fall and Spring seasons. Novice rowers will be billed for uniform and unisuit costs separately (approx. $150), as will rowers needing replacement items. Additionally, each rower must have an annual entry pass ($30-80) for Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake purchased directly through the park office. Regatta Fees range from $65.00 for in-state regattas and $200.00 for out-of-state regattas. Travel and hotel expenses are the responsibility of the rower. See the Financial Commitment form in our registration documents for more detailed explanations of cost.
  • When and where are practices held?
Practices are held at our boathouse on beautiful Turkey Lake @ Bill Frederick Park. Practice begins at 3:15 PM, and concludes by 5:45PM Monday through Friday (Wed. 2:15-4:45PM). From November through March, the park gate closes at 5pm. The park has agreed to allow entry for parents for pick up between 5:30-5:45pm. If you do not arrive before 5pm, you will need to wait for that 15-minute window to enter the park. Parents are responsible for their athletes transportation to and from practice, however carpooling and ride sharing is encouraged and frequently utilized. Saturdays are typically reserved for regattas, fundraising, volunteering and other team-building activities.
  • Can students successfully juggle both crew and school?
YES! Most of our rowers hold high GPAs and carry heavy AP course loads. Our coaches will work with any student athlete that may need extra help in order to ensure success. Crew teaches discipline and time management skills needed to succeed.
